A Dangerous Method

In a nutshell, the boys got what they wanted. “Keira got her boob out!” was the common cry of many, and their little lives were complete. I let out a rather enthusiastic cheer at the first appearance of Michael Fassbender and that turned a few heads. So basically we were the obsessive, rowdy bunch and certainly the exception in the older, middle class audience that night. Mind you, it was Odeon, so maybe not.

It was more like this.

Despite the star studded cast and my three scoops of Ben and Jerry’s (Lent not going well), the film didn’t exactly float my boat. My expectations of a psychological version of a Beautiful Mind were certainly unfulfilled. Considering the plot, the play it was based on, and the sheer amount of talent at hand, it fell short of what it really should have been in my opinion. The film was supposed to be about the relationship between Jung and Freud, but if you asked me to analyse said relationship, I wouldn’t be able to tell you much. It got to the point where I didn’t even understand who the main characters were meant to be.

"Aragorn and... Magneto?

I mean, I’m not (that) stupid, but the plot was both cluttered and simplistic at the same time. Dare I say it, it tried to be too clever for it’s own good. For example, in the final scene (which very much echoes the last scene in The Godfather: Part II), I felt quite guilty for not being able to sympathise with Jung’s situation, but it is the job of the script, direction and performance to make me feel enticed and engaged with those characters.

I was rather disappointed to say the least, since this film falls way short of Knightley’s and Fassbender’s other works. Fish Tank definitely made me hate Fassbender with a passion for a good week and Atonement was so powerful that I was close to tears (which never happens). Their ability to make the audience feel such powerful emotion towards their characters just proves how talented they are, and I wish Cronenberg utilized their potential more efficiently.

Here’s a fun fact for you: Keira Knightley wasn’t sure how best to portray her character’s hysteria, so she called up the director on Skype and pulled a variety of different faces at him. Coincidentally, this is exactly what I do with my boyfriend. (This may also may go some way to explain why he is no longer my boyfriend)

2.5/5 "Disappointing, given its potential"
